To God Be The Glory - May 2011

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ! This week I wanted to share with everyone about a personal story of evangelism that happened only a few weeks ago. It didn’t take place at a big planned outreach, and in all reality, I hadn’t been planning to share the Gospel at all…

10:34 PM* – Officer Ryan and Officer (Bob**) are sitting in the dispatch room talking.

The shift was coming to a close and my coworker and I were chatting about random things. This was the first time that I had worked with (Bob) and didn’t know much about him or his religious background. Suddenly, (Bob) brought up the things of God. I ignored the inkling to press further, but he stayed on the subject. At this point, I realized that this was a God-given opportunity to share the Gospel with (Bob).

10:41 PM – Officer Ryan shares the Gospel with Officer (Bob).

(Bob) seemed to have some knowledge of church topics, so I went through the Law and the Gospel in a modified testimonial form. “I love the 10 Commandments because it shows us how sinful and wretched we really are when compared to God’s standard of holiness. Like how lying makes us liars and Revelation 21:8 says, ‘all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur.’ I did the same for a few other Commandments, and then shared the Good News! “God sent His Son to die for our sins. He paid our fine! We can have eternal life if we turn from sin and put our trust in Christ to save us!”

10:50 PM – Officer (Bob) throws in a curveball.

I finished sharing the Gospel and we continued talking about various things. (Bob) then made a mention about the 1611 King James Version of the Bible being the only real Bible. I refused to go down this rabbit trail and continued with our conversations. The KJV Bible is a decent translation of the Bible, much better than some books out there that claim to be Bibles. The problem is that most KJV only-ists cling to that translation and put it on a pedestal equal to God Himself. We finished our shift and went our separate ways without any animosity.

08:29 AM – Officer Ryan receives stunning news. (The next morning)

“Officer (Bob) has resigned from his position due to scheduling conflicts.” I was shocked that (Bob) was gone, just like that. I pray that what we talked about stuck in his head and that he will search the scriptures to make sure that what I said was true.

Present Day – The Moral of the Story

God tells us to “Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not…” (2 Timothy 4:2). Thankfully, I was ready that day when talking to Officer (Bob). Christian, if an opportunity to share the Gospel presents itself, will you be ready? We tend to worry about the best parking spot, the color of the curtains, or the best translation of the Bible… but none of it matters when a person dies and spends eternity in Hell! What would you say to me if I were unsaved and had three minutes to live?

“How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone” (James 4:14). It’s a proven fact that over 150,000 people die every day… that’s about 2 people every second. Please be ready to share the cure for death, sin, judgment, and Hell! If you aren’t sure how to share your faith with others, check out Way of the Master, a ministry of Living Waters. Their “sole purpose is to inspire and equip Christians—to teach them how to share the gospel simply, effectively, biblically . . . the way Jesus did” (wayofthemaster.com).

Thanks for taking the time to read this post. It is my prayer that you will be encouraged to seek and save the lost for Christ more and more. May God bless you in abundance!

* Times and dialogue quotes are estimated. Scripture quotes are unaltered from the New Living Translation of the Bible.
** Name changed to protect identity of Officer (Bob).
