To God be the Glory - April 2011

"To God be the Glory" will be our regular installment of stories from the mission field. Enjoy these stories, but also remember to keep the people in them bathed in prayer. ~ From Ryan

While this blog will touch on a couple of outreaches that has taken place this month, the main portion of the blog will be a reflection of my experience at the homeless shelter this month.

Mr. Worldly
Ryan and I went to the men's homeless shelter this month to share the gospel (oh, and to distribute food, clothing, and hygiene items too). This ministry started a few months ago by an evangelist friend of ours and we have enjoyed becoming involved in this ministry which has a strong evangelistic focus.

Ryan preached a gospel message to the men and afterwards, the male workers had started talking with some of the men at the shelter one on one. There was another lady working at the shelter besides me and she was responsible for serving the food and hygiene items. I handled passing out tracts to all the men that came.

While sitting and waiting for more men to arrive, I was approached by a man who I had seen at the shelter before. This man asked to hear my story so I assumed he wanted to know how I came to be a follower of Jesus Christ. As I was telling him my story though, I got the feeling that he was not really interested in anything that I was saying.

When I finished, this gentleman began to open up with me and talk about himself. I titled this section of the blog Mr. Worldly because that was exactly what this man was focused on. Drinking, women, nice cars, all things fleeting. He professed to be a believer in Christ and yet he seemed distraught by the fact that his lifestyle was not as fast paced and fancy as it used to be. I tried to find out about a conversion moment where he had repented and placed his trust in Jesus, but every time I attempted to ask him about his salvation, he would just continue to reminisce about the life he once lived. I explained to this gentleman that all those things mean nothing when we die.

What is the most heartbreaking thing about my conversation with Mr. Worldly is that he believes he is saved and yet his eyes are on everything but Jesus. He is not content with merely knowing the Savior, but is clinging to everything that brings pleasure for only a season.

I prayed with this gentleman for a couple of needs in his life (although I did not pray for one of the things he asked for prayer about). Then I gave this gentleman one of the Bibles that we had and a "Hoppy Easter" tract which was graciously given to us by Bezeugen Tract Club. Please pray for Mr. Worldly. Pray for his salvation and that he would let go of his love for the things of the world.

"Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him." 1 John 2:15

Please also pray for the other gentlemen who heard the gospel on this outreach event. There is nothing more important than the proclamation of Jesus Christ and what He has done for mankind.

Additional Outreach Events in April
Ryan and Jo (my sister and fellow missional evangelist) participated in a nationwide outreach which had different groups sharing the gospel at opening weekend for each team that was part of the MLB. Several hundred baseball themed tracts were distributed and there were even a few open airs that took place.

Another outreach that Ryan and I participated in this week was distributing tracts door to door. With it being Easter, this is a great opportunity for people to proclaim the gospel. Ryan and I hit a couple of streets and placed tracts in our neighbors' doorways. Ryan even was able to personally hand a tract to a man who lives directly across the street from us.

Prayer Requests
Please keep our workers in prayer as we continue to witness to those in our area. Please pray for wisdom and discernment regarding the words that we would say in our witnessing conversations. Please pray for each soul that we have reached out to. Thank you and God Bless.
