Convicted Killer Seeks Freedom Through Death

Jodi Arias
Who is Jodi Arias? She is a woman who has just been convicted of murdering her boyfriend, Travis Alexander, in 2008. Her attorney claimed that the killing of Travis was done in self-defense... but twenty-seven (27) stab wounds, a gunshot through the head, numerous bruises, and attempted decapitation seem to tell a different story.

After the verdict, Jodi stated, "I said years ago that I'd rather get death than life, and that still is true today... I believe death is the ultimate freedom, so I'd rather just have my freedom as soon as I can get it." Unfortunately for her, death is not the end result. The Bible says, "it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment" (Hebrews 9:27).

Have you ever murdered someone? Think twice before you answer that question. Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire" (Matthew 5:21-22). God requires absolute perfection--in your thoughts, words, and actions--and we all fall short of that standard. "Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him" (1 John 3:15).

Thankfully, God made a way for you to have eternal life in spite of the sins that you've committed. He sent Jesus Christ, who was born from a virgin and lived a sinless life. Jesus was God in the flesh and was crucified to pay the fine for you with His blood. "Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins" (Hebrews 9:22). He came back to life three days later. If you turn away from your sins and trust Jesus, God will forgive you of every sin and grant you the gift of eternal life!
